Гимн Австралии

«Развивайся, прекрасная Австралия» (Advance Australia Fair) — официальный национальный гимн Австралии — был сочинен Питером Доддсом Маккормиком (Peter Dodds McCormick) и впервые исполнен в 1878 году, но получил статус официального гимна только спустя 106 лет.

До 1984 года гимном Австралии был «Боже, храни Королеву» (God Save the Queen), который первые поселенцы привезли с собой из Англии.

В 1973 году правительство Австралии решило, что стране необходим новый гимн и объявило конкурс по его поиску. Конкурс проводился (Australia Council for the Arts) в два этапа: сначала выбирали слова, а затем музыку. Несмотря на приз в A$5,000 в каждой из номинаций, победителя не выбрали по причине отсутствия достойных заявок.

В 1974 году Статистическое бюро Австралии опросило 60,000 человек и согласно результатам большинство предпочло Advance Australia Fair на роль национального гимна.

Одним из дополнительных вопросов референдума 1977 года и стал вопрос выбора национального гимна Австралии. По результатам победил Advance Australia Fair (43.6%), оставив позади неофициальный гимн Waltzing Matilda (28.5%), а также God Save the Queen (18.7%) и Song of Australia (9.7%).

19 апреля 1984 года официальным гимном Австралии стал Advance Australia Fair.
